This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Chop Robinson, the No. 35 name on the board, stolen at slot 59.
The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in offensive lineman, quarterback and other spots stayed open. The offensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
If Logue pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A edge rusher of that caliber at No. 59 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with offensive lineman, quarterback and other spots open.
Value with a capital V on DJ James in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in Round 4, Pick 27, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A quiet steal in the 164th pick: McCallan Castles for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They went early on Zion Logue in pick No. 239, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Carson Steele at pick 248 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
