The Cowboys bet big and early on Akheem Mesidor, 155 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
On value alone, Knight Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a centerpiece for the ground game at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Tre Harris at pick No. 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Deone Walker at No. 76. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Tyler Cooper in Round 5, Pick 11 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Oronde Gadsden II in the 172nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Akheem Mesidor at pick No. 187 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Quinn Carroll at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Jordan Hancock in pick 211, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached a country mile for Jaylin Smith at slot 212, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jack Kiser at the 249th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
