Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Danny Stutsman, the No. 91 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 249.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. If Colby pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that.
Luther Burden III at the 44th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Omarion Hampton in slot 76 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Aeneas Peebles in Round 5, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Carson Schwesinger at the 170th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Connor Colby in pick No. 172; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Sebastian Castro all the way to pick 190, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow Lathan Ransom was still sitting there in pick No. 211, and they pounced on premier safety value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They barely believed it either: Danny Stutsman still on the board at Round 7, Pick 31. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
