You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Dayon Hayes at the 168th pick, roughly 112 spots before his name belonged. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
That Stutsman pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Ashton Jeanty in pick No. 44 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Restrepo in pick 76, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Vernon Broughton in slot 148 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Dayon Hayes in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A straight-up fair deal on Joshua Gray at Round 5, Pick 33, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Carson Vinson at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at No. 186 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Ty Hamilton at slot 209 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: DJ Campbell still on the board at the 247th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
