The Cowboys did not so much draft KJ Jefferson as overpay for him, 100 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Landing Bowman Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
Ashton Jeanty at No. 12 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Matthew Golden at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Omarr Norman-Lott in the 76th pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Jack Nelson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They jumped the gun on Joshua Gray, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jeffrey Bassa at the 172nd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Oluwafemi Oladejo in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board fumbled Billy Bowman Jr. all the way to slot 190, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Jake Briningstool at No. 211, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
KJ Jefferson at pick 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
