The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Barryn Sorrell at the 190th overall pick regardless, 138 picks early. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Gadsden II pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a potential shutdown corner at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Jihaad Campbell in pick 44, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Elic Ayomanor at No. 76 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Brashard Smith in the 150th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
CJ West at the 170th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Luke Kandra in pick No. 172 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Anthony Belton reach slot 174 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barryn Sorrell. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
KJ Jefferson in pick 249 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
