You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Akheem Mesidor at No. 209, roughly 127 spots before his name belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Getting Mondon Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Walter Nolen at the 44th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Omarion Hampton at the 76th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Savion Williams at pick 148 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Hayden Conner all the way to slot 168, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach Round 5, Pick 33 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Lathan Ransom in the 173rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Quinn Carroll at the 186th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Akheem Mesidor well ahead of where he belonged. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; KJ Jefferson in No. 248 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
