You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jasheen Davis at the 173rd pick, roughly 129 spots before his name belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
That Carter pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A safety of that caliber at pick 44 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 12, and they pounced on premier running back value. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take JJ Pegues this early at the 148th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Addison West in No. 168, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Barrett Carter in pick No. 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jasheen Davis in No. 173, miles early. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Mac McWilliams in the 186th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A conviction pick on Terrance Ferguson at the 209th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Jonas Sanker at pick No. 248 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
