The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. KJ Jefferson went at slot 249, a good 100 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That Bassa pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a security blanket over the middle. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Omarion Hampton at slot 44. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaiah Bond in pick 76 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Darius Alexander at pick No. 116 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ajani Cornelius at Round 5, Pick 11 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Jared Wilson still on the board at No. 170. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Lathan Ransom at pick 172 for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 174 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jake Briningstool. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Jeffrey Bassa at slot 211 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Davin Vann in the 234th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on KJ Jefferson in the 249th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
