Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 99 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 5 slot.
The Travis reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a featured back at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
James Pearce Jr. at pick No. 44 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Steal is underselling it; Nick Emmanwori at the 76th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Savion Williams at pick No. 148 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Luke Kandra at slot 168 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 170 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
JJ Pegues in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jalen Travis at the 186th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Cobee Bryant at No. 209 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into KJ Jefferson at Round 7, Pick 32, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
