You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Barryn Sorrell at pick 190, roughly 125 spots before his name belonged.
The Shough value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that. More want than need.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kaleb Johnson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Carson Schwesinger at pick 76, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Pat Bryant for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Tommi Hill come to them and pounced at No. 170. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Dorian Strong in pick No. 172, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Shough at No. 174 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Barryn Sorrell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They paid sticker price for Carson Vinson in the 211th overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Thor Griffith in Round 7, Pick 31 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
