There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for KJ Jefferson, 87 picks ahead of schedule. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That Bassa pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Kaleb Johnson at slot 44 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Denzel Burke in the 76th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Jeffrey Bassa was still sitting there in No. 149, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ajani Cornelius in pick No. 171 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jonah Monheim slid further than he should have, and the 174th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jaylen Reed at Round 6, Pick 28 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No drama and no debate, CJ West went about where he belonged in the 211th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Barryn Sorrell at slot 239 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on KJ Jefferson at No. 247, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
