You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jasheen Davis at No. 239, roughly 116 spots before his name belonged.
Hairston falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 44; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Omarr Norman-Lott in slot 76 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Maxwell Hairston in No. 149 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Tyler Shough in the 171st overall pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cody Simon at pick 174 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Chase Lundt here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Clay Webb in the 211th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Jasheen Davis at No. 239, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Luke Lachey at pick No. 247 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
