You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Ethan Downs at the 239th pick, roughly 45 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, Pegues makes the weekend a net positive.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Tre Harris in the 44th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Carson Schwesinger in No. 76 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took O'Donnell Fortune at par in the 149th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ajani Cornelius at slot 171 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Connor Colby a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
JJ Pegues in the 204th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Luke Lachey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Ethan Downs at pick No. 239, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They went early on Cody Lindenberg in the 247th pick, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
