The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 109 spots for Jasheen Davis, and value like that does not grow back.
The Howard pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a potential shutdown corner at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 76th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Will Howard was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 171, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in pick 174, with Tommi Hill worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Carson Vinson at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Logan Parr. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Tonka Hemingway in pick 239; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jasheen Davis in No. 247, miles early. A minor itch, scratched.
