There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Jasheen Davis a full 92 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They banked enough surplus on McCord to cover a lot of smaller sins. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kaleb Johnson in pick 44 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Carson Schwesinger at the 76th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into JJ Pegues at the 150th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Nohl Williams in pick No. 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kyle McCord in slot 172 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Oronde Gadsden II in slot 174 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Addison West. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Jaylen Reed in Round 6, Pick 33 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jasheen Davis this early at pick No. 249. A minor itch, scratched.
