Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cam Skattebo got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at pick 207.
Thornton Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Myles Garrett deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in pick 79, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach on Hollin Pierce in the 103rd pick; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 148 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in Round 7, Pick 1, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Taking Luke Lachey in pick No. 238 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garrett Dellinger at No. 250 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
