Washington Commanders

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Commanders a B-.

The Jaydon Blue pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 92 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

The Mondon Jr. pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.24 · Pick 56 · JT Tuimoloau · DE-EDGE · rank 49
JT Tuimoloau at the 56th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 80
Value said wait; Darien Porter in pick No. 61 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 67
No drama and no debate, Deone Walker went about where he belonged in slot 62. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 86
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Hollin Pierce · OT · rank 118
A wild overpay on Hollin Pierce in the 94th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.9 · Pick 148 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 185
A real head-scratcher, Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 148 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.36 · Pick 175 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 198
They left a pile of value on the table to take Luke Lachey this early at the Round 5 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.16 · Pick 194 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 111
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 6, Pick 16 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R6.29 · Pick 207 · Que Robinson · LB-EDGE · rank 254
Que Robinson at pick 207 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.20 · Pick 238 · Jaydon Blue · RB · rank 330
Jaydon Blue in No. 238 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.32 · Pick 250 · Roc Taylor · WR · rank 197
Steal is underselling it; Roc Taylor at slot 250 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
