Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jaylen Reed got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 250th overall pick.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had Jahdae Barron higher than the 29th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Alfred Collins in Round 2, Pick 29 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Donovan Jackson in pick No. 79 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Emery Jones Jr. in the 148th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Luke Lachey in slot 207. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow KeAndre Lambert-Smith was still sitting there in pick 238, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Jaylen Reed at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
