The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Bo Nix, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
If Hartman pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The Rosemy-Jacksaint value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 38 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Malachi Corley at the 48th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kiran Amegadjie in the 66th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They did well to land Christian Haynes in pick No. 68, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in No. 71, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Trey Benson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Jonah Elliss higher than No. 98, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Cam Hart in slot 103; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Tyler Davis in pick No. 111 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Spencer Rattler in the 112th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Dallin Holker at pick 134 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on Beau Brade, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in Round 5, Pick 4, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Nelson Ceaser in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaheim Bell at Round 5, Pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Marist Liufau in pick No. 172 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in the 180th pick, with Kamal Hadden worth more than the price. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
By-the-book stuff, Fabien Lovett at slot 185 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Jaylen Harrell at par in the 200th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nathaniel Watson at No. 218 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 219 with a little surplus value in Caedan Wallace. The roster fit checks out.
Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Sam Hartman in slot 225, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Michael Barrett enough to skip the value, taking him in the 226th pick. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at pick 231 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Myles Harden at pick No. 232 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dominique Hampton at No. 243 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trevin Wallace in Round 7, Pick 26. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
