New England Patriots

The Patriots let Hadden fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Kamal Hadden at the 193rd overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Rattler has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.

They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.13 · Pick 13 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 10
In the 13th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 25
Value with a capital V on Amarius Mims in No. 34, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 44
They took Chris Braswell at par in Round 2, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 73
No edge and no loss on Ja'Lynn Polk in the 68th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 66
Kiran Amegadjie at slot 77 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 117
They paid up for Spencer Rattler at pick 105 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 137 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 165
Marist Liufau in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 172
AJ Barner slid further than he should have, and Round 6, Pick 6 is lovely value for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 168
Taking Kamal Hadden in slot 193 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Cedric Johnson · DE-EDGE · rank 226
Cedric Johnson at pick No. 231 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
