The war room fell hard for Jaylen Wright, and it showed at pick No. 91: 72 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
However the rest shakes out, Phillips at that price is a win they earned. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A clean, defensible pick in the 57th overall pick with a little surplus value in Ja'Tavion Sanders. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Jaden Hicks at slot 88, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Jaylen Wright at pick 91, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Max Melton come to them and pounced at the 126th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 5, Pick 32 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They took Christian Jones at par in pick 203, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Andru Phillips at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Evan Williams at the 243rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A reach on Nathaniel Watson in No. 251; the board had better options right there. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
