The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Dolphins watched Jordan James slide 102 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
Reaching for Jones left real value on the table behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
The Dolphins paired the rookies with proven help, Tytus Howard leading the way.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 16, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Malaki Starks at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in slot 80, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in pick 86, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Ajani Cornelius at the 98th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
They liked Daylen Everette enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 107. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sai'vion Jones well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hayden Conner in No. 115, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Jake Majors in the 133rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on DeMonte Capehart. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jordan James at the 154th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Brady Cook at pick No. 179 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyler Batty in Round 7, Pick 2 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Lander Barton in slot 224 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nick Nash at the 231st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Jimmy Horn Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
