When a board-topper like Kalel Mullings slides to the 217th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Cook pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
They paid sticker price for Aireontae Ersery in pick No. 45, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Kyle Kennard at the 69th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Jordan Burch at No. 77 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at pick 106 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Denzel Burke here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Kalel Mullings at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Joshua Gray at slot 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Brady Cook, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
