The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Jase McClellan slide 48 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

The cost of the Jefferson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 25
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Legette at the 62nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
The board fumbled Patrick Paul all the way to slot 87, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
Max Melton at pick 113 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
By-the-book stuff, Isaac Guerendo at No. 128 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 184
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Jefferson this early at Round 5, Pick 27. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 146
Taking Mason McCormick in the 174th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
A slide stopped in pick No. 216, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.43 · Pick 218 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
A premium they did not need to pay, Trevin Wallace a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
Circle this one: Cornelius Johnson at Round 7, Pick 8 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
They will replay Trente Jones at pick 233 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jase McClellan in No. 244, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
