The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Carson Schwesinger, the No. 126 name on the board, sitting there at slot 248 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will need Wedig to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Everything downstream of Shedeur Sanders depends on Shedeur Sanders, and the building knows it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 1st overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
In pick No. 12 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Omarion Hampton slid further than he should have, and the 35th pick is lovely value for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Luther Burden III in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyler Warren in Round 3, Pick 12 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a linebacker like Demetrius Knight Jr. reach pick 101 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jalon Walker in slot 104 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Aeneas Peebles at No. 118 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jordan James at No. 148 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tez Johnson in the 167th pick, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Willie Lampkin at Round 5, Pick 31 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Joshua Gray in the 170th overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
DeMonte Capehart at pick 173 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nazir Stackhouse in pick No. 176 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Addison West in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Cam Skattebo at slot 209 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Wedig this early at the 239th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Carson Schwesinger in the 248th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
