Green Bay Packers

The Packers overdrafted McGregor and paid the price. Grade: F.

The Packers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick 156 on Braiden McGregor a full 42 spots early. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The Bishop pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and tight end still on the board.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 27
In the 25th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 33
Tyler Nubin is a better player than pick 41 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 71
Brenden Rice at No. 63 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 95
Tyler Davis at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 104
The board had cheaper options than Khyree Jackson at the 94th pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 118
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kris Abrams-Draine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 127
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 126
They took Javon Foster at par in slot 125, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 129
A reasonable price with a little left over, Will Shipley in the Round 4 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 151
They liked Braelon Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in the 134th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.20 · Pick 156 · Braiden McGregor · DL-EDGE · rank 198
Braiden McGregor in the 156th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 189
They reached into another round for JD Bertrand, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
