You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McCaffrey.
If McLachlan pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get their quarterback of the future at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Troy Fautanu at pick 23 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Kamari Lassiter slipping to pick No. 55 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Zak Zinter at No. 108 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Beau Brade at par in the 129th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Justin Eboigbe at the Round 5 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Luke McCaffrey all the way to the 184th pick, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tanner McLachlan at slot 198 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 241 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
