The Jimmy Horn Jr. pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 129 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The Barton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malaki Starks in the 44th pick, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A running back of that caliber at No. 76 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Mason Taylor at pick 148 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Brashard Smith still on the board at slot 170. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Jimmy Horn Jr. at pick 173, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
James Burnip at the 186th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Lander Barton in pick No. 209 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Shilo Sanders in the 248th overall pick, and that is fine. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
