Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins found their guy under center in McCarthy: D.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Dolphins shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. It grades a D, and the process earned it.

Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.21 · Pick 21 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 23
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get the face of the franchise. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.25 · Pick 25 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 21
In the 25th pick they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 51
T.J. Tampa in slot 55 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 92
Gabriel Murphy at pick 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
Zak Zinter at the 108th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 104
They barely believed it either: Cole Bishop still on the board at pick No. 129. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 147
They let Jacob Cowing come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 162
They paid sticker price for Jared Wiley in No. 158, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 165
Marist Liufau in pick 167 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 178
Nothing to complain about; Khristian Boyd went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 187
A slide stopped in slot 198, with Cornelius Johnson worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 229
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Frank Gore Jr. at No. 241 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
