The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Hollin Pierce at the Round 4 slot regardless, 29 picks early. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Warren steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The back end got a real overhaul.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Need was not the driver here.
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach pick No. 38 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Ozzy Trapilo in slot 69 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Isaiah Bond. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Hollin Pierce at the 106th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Andres Borregales in the 144th pick; the board had better options right there. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
