Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent the Round 4 slot on Gabe Hall, a name the board had a full 93 spots lower. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 27th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In pick No. 30 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Graham Barton at pick 56 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at slot 66 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Braelon Allen at the 87th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Zak Zinter in slot 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Gabe Hall in Round 4, Pick 25, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylen Wright at pick 156 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
