Washington Commanders

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Commanders a B.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with VJ Payne in the Round 4 slot. No fireworks, but a solid B.

A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

Job largely done: cornerback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Arvell Reese · LB · rank 7
In No. 7 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. More want than need.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Connor Lew · C · rank 82
They paid sticker price for Connor Lew in pick 82, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.39 · Pick 139 · VJ Payne · S · rank 196
VJ Payne in Round 4, Pick 39 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.2 · Pick 142 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 190
Ephesians Prysock at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.29 · Pick 210 · Noah Whittington · RB · rank 226
Noah Whittington at pick No. 210 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.32 · Pick 213 · Jadon Canady · CB · rank 214
Jadon Canady at the 213th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
