Washington Commanders

The Commanders answered their biggest question with Daniels. Grade: B-.

Future A+

Start where it matters. The Commanders took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 7
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
They paid sticker price for Jordan Morgan in the 36th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
They took Ja'Tavion Sanders at par in No. 38, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
They paid a round early for Edgerrin Cooper in pick 40, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 77
They went early on Austin Booker in Round 3, Pick 3, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 75
Good price on Mike Sainristil in pick No. 78, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
A clean, defensible pick in the 100th pick with a little surplus value in Brenden Rice. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Roger Rosengarten at slot 106 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 139 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 162
Xavier Thomas in the 152nd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 271
They reached into another round for Matthew Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
