The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cam Skattebo, the No. 113 name on the board, in Round 7, Pick 1.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tre Harris in the 38th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Xavier Watts at pick No. 69 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tyleik Williams at slot 81 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ajani Cornelius in the 105th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Danny Stutsman in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Cam Skattebo in Round 7, Pick 1 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jonah Monheim at No. 220 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ben Yurosek slid further than he should have, and pick No. 241 is lovely value for the tight end. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
