Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Jihaad Campbell, the No. 40 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 209th overall pick.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 15 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Ashton Jeanty in Round 2, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Walter Nolen at the 74th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Jahdae Barron all the way to slot 81, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Wyatt Milum at the 117th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quinshon Judkins in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cam Ward at No. 168 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Restrepo in pick No. 170, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in pick 171, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
T.J. Sanders at pick No. 186 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
