The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Getting Wallace where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 27 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Tyler Guyton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the 68th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Patrick Paul at pick No. 74 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
MarShawn Lloyd in Round 4, Pick 3 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Caelen Carson in pick 104, just ahead of his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Mohamed Kamara in the 137th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Beau Brade was the payoff at the 143rd pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nothing to complain about; Dylan Laube went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Malik Mustapha higher than slot 180, and the safety fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Myles Cole went about where he belonged in pick No. 193. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Caedan Wallace reach the 231st overall pick and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
