Start where it matters. The Commanders took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The Jean-Baptiste pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In the end it comes back to Jayden Daniels, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jordan Morgan at the 36th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Braswell at pick 40, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 3, Pick 3; it is a wash and a sensible one. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Austin Booker at No. 78 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Audric Estime in the 100th overall pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Blake Fisher in pick No. 138 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Jaheim Bell in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Isaiah Davis went about where he belonged in slot 152. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Walter Rouse in No. 160 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Javontae Jean-Baptiste at Round 5, Pick 37, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
