You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will need Robinson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
So much rides on Joe Alt that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Quinyon Mitchell in No. 37. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Jackson Powers-Johnson went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Brandon Dorlus at the 69th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 78 with a little surplus value in Blake Corum. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid a round early for Darius Robinson in Round 4, Pick 6, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Ben Sinnott at par in pick 139, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Michael Barrett in the 183rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Wallace. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in slot 256, where Zakhari Franklin graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
