The rest of the league had time to spare on John Emery Jr.; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 115 spots ahead at the 251st overall pick.

The Smith pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots went begging. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 31
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 44
Kris Jenkins slipping to pick 57 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 107
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaden Hicks in the Round 3 slot, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 87
Fair-plus on McKinnley Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 96
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent No. 126 on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 149
Dylan Laube at pick 168 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Darius Muasau · LB · rank 238
A real head-scratcher, Darius Muasau in the 203rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 226
They paid up for Tanor Bortolini at pick No. 216 when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Daequan Hardy · CB · rank 241
They took Daequan Hardy at par in Round 7, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · John Emery Jr. · RB · rank 366
Value said wait; John Emery Jr. in slot 251 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
