The Packers did not so much draft Evan Williams as overpay for him, 36 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Hicks pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide, outstanding value to boot.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 41 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
Byron Murphy II at pick No. 57 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A tidy little value on Mike Sainristil in pick 88, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ray Davis in slot 91 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A safety of that caliber at the 125th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Cedric Gray at the 135th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Christian Jones at the 203rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Demani Richardson at No. 217, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Nice patience on Jawhar Jordan, who had no business lasting to pick 219. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
