They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Fernando Mendoza is the Raiders' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The cost of the Black reach is exactly the players who went right after him. With edge rusher unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Hunter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.1

No edge and no loss on Fernando Mendoza in No. 1; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Denzel Boston
· WR
· rank 31
Denzel Boston in pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Lee Hunter

Lee Hunter at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Zakee Wheatley
· S
· rank 90
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zakee Wheatley at the 102nd pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.17
· Pick 117
· Genesis Smith

A surprising call. With edge rusher still to address, they spent pick No. 117 on Genesis Smith, a safety they were not short of.
R4.34
· Pick 134
· Will Lee III
· CB
· rank 126
A slide stopped in the 134th overall pick, with Will Lee III worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.35
· Pick 175
· J'Mari Taylor
· RB
· rank 195
J'Mari Taylor in Round 5, Pick 35 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.4
· Pick 185
· Kaelon Black
· RB
· rank 227
Kaelon Black at slot 185 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.27
· Pick 208
· Riley Nowakowski
· TE
· rank 225
Riley Nowakowski in pick No. 208 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.3
· Pick 219
· Pat Coogan
· C
· rank 205
They read the board right and Pat Coogan was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
