When a board-topper like Josh Cameron slides to the 228th pick, you do not overthink it, and the Jets did not. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
They will need Perkins Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Jets indulged a want in Perkins Jr. while a need in edge rusher and safety stayed open.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.12
· Pick 12
· Monroe Freeling
· OT
· rank 26
In pick No. 12 they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all. A real need, handled.
R1.16
· Pick 16
· Kayden McDonald
· DT
· rank 20
No edge and no loss on Kayden McDonald in the 16th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R1.23
· Pick 23
· Sonny Styles
· LB
· rank 21
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. More want than need.
R2.1
· Pick 33
· Chris Brazzell II
· WR
· rank 29
Chris Brazzell II in pick 33 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Dontay Corleone
· DT
· rank 67
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dontay Corleone well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.34
· Pick 98
· Nicholas Singleton
· RB
· rank 108
They paid a round early for Nicholas Singleton in No. 98, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
R3.35
· Pick 99
· Chase Bisontis
· OG
· rank 70
You do not let an offensive lineman like Chase Bisontis reach slot 99 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Harold Perkins Jr.
· LB
· rank 133
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Harold Perkins Jr. in the 103rd pick leaves edge rusher and safety for later.
R4.40
· Pick 140
· Drew Allar
· QB
· rank 157
Drew Allar at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.39
· Pick 179
· Domani Jackson
· CB
· rank 176
They did well to land Domani Jackson in the 179th pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.12
· Pick 228
· Josh Cameron
· WR
· rank 187
Josh Cameron in slot 228 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.26
· Pick 242
· Jaren Kanak
· TE
· rank 227
A slide stopped in the 242nd overall pick, with Jaren Kanak worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
