You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Ozzy Trapilo in the 90th pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Getting Mondon Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Tate Ratledge in pick No. 26 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Zy Alexander at No. 58 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Jordan Burch, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 26. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 161st overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
