Start where it matters. The Commanders took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Reaching for Gore Jr. left real value on the table behind him. That Pearl pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In the end it comes back to Jayden Daniels, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.5
· Pick 5
· Jayden Daniels
· QB
· rank 7
In the 5th pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Ja'Tavion Sanders
· TE
· rank 36
No drama and no debate, Ja'Tavion Sanders went about where he belonged in the 36th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.5
· Pick 37
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 38
Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· T'Vondre Sweat
· DT
· rank 45
T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 41 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Kiran Amegadjie
· OT
· rank 66
Kiran Amegadjie at pick 67 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.14
· Pick 78
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 95
The board had cheaper options than Khyree Jackson at No. 78, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 116
A surprising call. With edge rusher still to address, they spent slot 100 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· James Williams
· S
· rank 124
They took James Williams at par in Round 4, Pick 26, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Trevor Keegan
· OG
· rank 144
Trevor Keegan in the 139th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.22
· Pick 158
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 145
Value with a capital V on Tommy Eichenberg in the 158th overall pick, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.23
· Pick 198
· Frank Gore Jr.
· RB
· rank 226
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 198 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Julian Pearl
· OT
· rank 204
Taking Julian Pearl in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
