Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until slot 171, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
Caldwell has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
A running back of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Fair-plus on Deone Walker, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joshua Gray this early at No. 148. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chris Paul Jr. at Round 5, Pick 31 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ricky White III at pick No. 170 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach pick 171 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Michael Taaffe still on the board at the 187th overall pick. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A premium they did not need to pay, Clay Webb a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in pick No. 247 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
