They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jared Wiley, 71 picks early at the 219th pick. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Hicks pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Getting Melton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a ballhawk on the back end. Need was not the driver here.
They read the board right and Graham Barton was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for McKinnley Jackson at pick 88 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Will Shipley at par in the 92nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Max Melton at No. 125 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jaden Hicks at safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
Michael Barrett slid further than he should have, and slot 203 is lovely value for the linebacker. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Davis at pick 217 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wild overpay on Jared Wiley in No. 219, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Had Carter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
