The Mario Williams pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 127 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They banked enough surplus on Skattebo to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Derrick Harmon worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malachi Moore in the 76th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Danny Stutsman in pick 148 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Shemar Turner went about where he belonged in the 168th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in Round 5, Pick 33, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Brady Cook at Round 5, Pick 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mario Williams in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at slot 209 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Jackson Hawes here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
