The Commanders did not so much draft Bryce Foster as overpay for him, 28 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Landing Haulcy that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th overall pick they get a three-down runner. A real need, handled.
They barely believed it either: A.J. Haulcy still on the board at the 71st pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A slide stopped in No. 74, with Zachariah Branch worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Devin Moore at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Oscar Delp slipping to slot 147 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had DeMonte Capehart higher than pick No. 148, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Bryce Boettcher at slot 187. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Sawyer Robertson in pick 209 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Bryce Foster in pick No. 223, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
