You build a draft on nights like this. Dwight McGlothern had no business being available in the 222nd pick, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They will need Wilson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in J.J. McCarthy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jordan Morgan at the 40th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 67. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Johnny Wilson at slot 78 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Johnson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Kamal Hadden at pick 139, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Walter Rouse in Round 5, Pick 16, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Dwight McGlothern at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
